A Beautiful Mix Of Old & New

The Global Villa

Two dilapidated Georgian buildings (circa 1815) remained empty and unloved for years in the heart of Dublin's city center. Previously owned by a bank, the ground floor functioned as commercial space while the upper lay neglected and uninhabited, that is, until homeowners Colm Doyle and Peter O'Reilly got their hands on it. Colm, an architect for DMVF Architects in Ireland, found their new home while searching for commercial property for a client. Over the course of eight months they renovated the Camden Street building into a city center haven that beautifully mixes the original Georgian elements with a new stylish minimalism. Despite the enormous size of the two buildings, the owners succeeded in creating a cozy space while having ample room to entertain. The rooms at the back of the building are quiet and private. The two buildings combined are approximately 8,000 square feet and five stories tall. Their restoration revealed an original brick facade and eight sliding slash windows. A stunning modern steel window at the back of the house adds drama to the interior hall and two spiral Georgian staircases stop the show. The home is decorated with an eclectic mix of modern and whimsical objects like a black and copper leaf pendant light, herringbone floors, designer furniture, wallpapers, an Irish hunting table and kitschy dog lampshades. The high ceilings and spacious rooms are painted in muted grey tones and have a masculine feel. Seeing these photos of Colm and Peter's amazing Camden Street home, it's hard to fathom that this minimalist paradise was once a dilapidated and unloved bank.
