As I scan the accounts of Instagram and Pinterest lately, I find myself drawn more and more to images reflecting the modern Swedish cottage style. "What is modern Swedish country style?" you ask. Well, according to me, it is one of the most beautiful, calming and relaxing design styles that exists. It finds its origins in the Gustavian Provincial aesthetic (1850s-1920s). The Gustavian style is similar to the neoclassical Louis XIV French style, but less opulent. After visiting the Palace of Versailles in the 1780's King Gustav of Sweden decided to replicate what he saw at home. The Gustavian style, however, is a more pale version of the French style with muted color palettes and pared back soft furnishings. The soft pale colors of grays and blues are meant to brighten up dark rooms during long Scandinavian winters. The Gustavian Provincial style (or Swedish country) is similar to French Provincial. It is less formal, softer and relaxed. But, it isn't cutesy. It is relaxed, yet stylish. You won't find checks or stripes or anything purposely distressed. Materials are organic, walls and floors are white, and mid-century modern and trendy elements often make an appearance. Overall, a wide variety of objects and textures are used to create a relaxed, comfortable and modern space.
