Modeled after the traditional 18th century coastal houses of Iceland, this black timber house reinvents the rustic Icelandic culture with a casual mix of old-world charm and 21st century sophistication. The traditional humble timber houses were painted black with tar to withstand the elements. Designer Rut Káradóttir chose a stunning palette of dark blue, grey and natural woods for the interior that mimics the stark vast landscape outside. The classic black on the exterior is dwarfed by the magnificent mountains and rugged coastline. Although modest in attitude, the interior's mix of modern chic and vintage elements provide an updated farmhouse feel that is calm and comfortable. The open floor plan with a soaring A-frame layout is bright and cozy. With Mount Hafnarfjall as the backdrop and views of the Snæfellsnes peninsula from its windows, this Borgarnes house is perfectly situated to explore west Iceland with its many towns, quaint villages, treacherous cliffs, sandy beaches and the mystical glacier Snaefellsjokull. This charming and chic country house reflects perfectly the rugged natural beauty of western Iceland, modern comfort and Iceland's long lost past.
