History: Built in 1953, this former motor lodge is an iconic part of California history. It was featured in the 1966 cult movie The Endless Summer. It has connections to music legends like The Doors, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young. An integral part of the Malibu landscape, this old motor lodge was transformed into a modern chic surf lodge.
The Landscape: Inspired by the picturesque Malibu landscape, the surfrider is a contemporary boutique hotel featuring solid natural materials like reclaimed wood, custom-made teak furniture, stone, ceramic tiles and Belgian linens. It has a light, airy and organic feel outfitted with hammocks, textured rugs and wicker lampshades. The color palette is neutral featuring whites and beiges that reflect the sandy surf below. An exclusive roof top deck features a fire pit, lounge chairs, music, and an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean.
Hospitality: Developed and designed by Matthew Goodwin, his wife Emma Crowther and Alessandro Zampedri, all decisions have been made with the same intention of capturing the rich heritage of California surf culture. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The food is locally sourced, sustainable and organic. The amenities are abundant which include surf boards to rent, instructors to hire, a hotel chauffeur and beach club services like umbrellas, chairs and coolers.
