Halfway between Athens and the island of Crete lies the little-known island of Milos. Although not as popular as the iconic islands of Santorini and Mykonos, it is just as stunning, with white sandy beaches and cobalt blue water. It is here perched on a cliff in the main town of Plaka that K-Studio Design Team carefully restored this 19th century house. Their goal was to revive the original intention of the design while also creating a comfortable and practical summer retreat for a London-based family.
Originally built in 1813, the house is primarily stone. The architects used locally sourced materials and traditional techniques in its construction. The house is two floors. The upper level is the main living area and is light-filled and airy. The courtyard entrance has a natural bamboo pergola. The lower level is a cave-like calming guest suite. The walls are roughly finished and the floor consists of organically laid slate stone. The contrasting characters of both floors were preserved. Simple raw finishes, slate and timber flooring and unpainted walls provide a cooling respite from the warm Greek climate. Custom-crafted furniture and accessories reflect the island setting while state of the art appliances and technology address the needs of modern day living. This authentically traditional designed space adapted for everyday use is the perfect Greek island retreat.
